      It was not until the 1850s that wildlife photography began to develop. Still, these are inert animals… that is to say, slaughtered for the needs of the photographer, sometimes stuffed for the sake of accuracy. Thus, equipped with a stereoscopic camera, a device combining two photographic chambers, the explorer James Chapman brought back in 1862 more than two hundred photos from his expedition to the Zambezi.

      It will be necessary to wait until 1870 for the first photos of living animals to be taken, using a technique that is however very artisanal: it was then a question of blowing the whistle so that the animal paused. The subjects were therefore only made up of captive animals from circuses or zoos.
