Victor-Emmanuel II (in Italian Vittorio Emanuele II), born March 14, 1820 in Turin and died January 9, 1878 in Rome, is a prince of the House of Savoy. He was Duke of Savoy, King of Sardinia, Prince of Piedmont and Count of Nice from 1849 to 1861, then first King of Italy from March 17, 1861 until his death. As King of Sardinia, he surrounded himself with great ministers like Massimo d'Azeglio and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, who modernized the kingdom. The achievement of Italian unification gives him the name of “Padre della Patria” (in French: Father of the Fatherland); he is also nicknamed "King Gentleman" (in Italian, Re galantuomo).
