ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
RENE-JACQUES (1908-2003):
Born in 1908 in Phnom Penh in Cambodia, René-Jacques defined the characteristics of his style from the start: rigor, moderation and respect for the subject.
Cultivated photographer, outstanding technician, he has for nearly forty years responded to all kinds of orders. He witnessed the social problems caused by the economic crisis of the 1930s in Paris.Wanted both for industrial reports and for architectural views, he also turned to set photography: Trailers by Jean Grémillon in 1939.
At the same time, he began to illustrate literary works. We owe him, among others, Envoûtements de Paris by Carco (1938), La mer est un pays secret by Peisson (1948) and Les Olympiques by Montherlant (1948).After the war, his career was punctuated by innumerable works of documentation and publications on urban and rural France.
His natural landscapes are exemplary successes, as are his monumental views of Paris. He undertook to make photography a major means of expression at the same time as he worked for full recognition of the profession of photographer through his activism within associations such as Rectangle or the Groupe des XV.René-Jacques treated man and technology, nature and civilisation, with a distanced restraint. Like Rodin, many of whose works he photographed, he thinks that art is a matter of science and patience.
